For children, Conventional mercury thermometers are risky than digital thermometers. The digital thermometer is a good replacement because of its safety & accuracy.

Taking accurate Read by a Digital Thermometer for Fever nowadays is important in this covid situation

What are the types of digital thermometers?

The type of digital thermometer depends on the part of the body where the temperature is tested.

Standard Multi-Use Digital Thermometer

This is an adjustable digital thermometer that contains a heat sensor attached to an LCD screen with a metal tip. The screen shows the temperature up to a decimal point for correct reading. It is used to measure oral (mouth), rectum (rectum), & axillary (armpit) temperature.

Tympanic (Ear Canal) Digital Infrared Thermometer

This thermometer is used only for ear canal temperature. It uses an infrared beam, which detects the heat level through a sensor and displays it on the LCD screen.

Temporary Artery (Forehead) Digital Infrared Thermometer

The thermometer is shaped in such a way that it can be simply placed on the forehead of a child. It uses an infrared beam to measure the temperature of the blood flowing in the temporal arteries of the forehead.

Digital thermometers are better than conventional thermometers because they give accurate lessons & are safe in the absence of mercury & glass. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of digital thermometers for children.

How to Take Temperature Using Digital Thermometer

Digital thermometers can be used to measure heat in a modern way and are easy to use. Due to the digital display, you can easily through temperature numbering. You can see and easily measure the temperature of 1 digit. Body temperature can be measured in a short time and easily with a digital thermometer.

How to Take Temperature Using Digital Thermometer

A digital thermometer can be used in 3 different ways.

  • Oral
  • Rectal
  • Axillary

Oral

For this method, the thermometer is placed within the tongue. This method is used for adults & children 4 & over who are able to hold the thermometer in their mouth.

Rectal

For this method, the thermometer is inserted carefully into the rectum. This is mostly wiped out babies but can use in children up to three years aged. You can take rectal temperatures in children older than 3 years, but it would be difficult to keep them as still as they have to stay.

Axillary

For this method, the thermometer is placed in the armpit for young children/adults whose temperature can’t safely be done orally. This method is not as accurate as oral/rectal but can be used as a first check. You can follow this with oral/rectal reading.

Rules of Cleaning

  • First, wash the thermometer with the spirit or soap water and wipe with a dry cloth. If it is a digital thermometer, ensure that water does not enter inside.
  • Check the position of the mercury if it is a normal thermometer. If it is above 98 degrees, shake it hard and lower the mercury. If it is a digital thermometer, turn it on by pressing the switch.
  • The base of the normal thermometer should be placed under the armpit or tongue for 1-2 minutes. Then if you check the thermometer you can see the result. In the case of a digital thermometer, you can see the result.
  • In adults, fever is measured by placing a thermometer under the tongue.
  • After measuring the fever, the thermometer should be washed and wiped.
